Green Space Pocket Prairies

pictured is an example of a pocket prairie. The lawn in front of the house has a mixture of grasses, shrubs, and flowers.
Project Description:

This project proposal seeks to take a radical approach to landscaping by establishing guiding principles that challenge human-centric relationships with the “landscape”. The selected preliminary sites for this project were regions that have been proven difficult to maintain as lawns, making them ideal for this conversion. These areas are difficult to access with equipment, have smaller/more irregular shaped lawns, and where leisure would not be preferred (damp and shady). Removal of current lawns and implementation of native grasses and shrubs will reduce water usage, attract native pollinators, provide educational opportunities, and decrease maintenance.

Upon further discussion with Liz Whitechurch at Facilities Management, two lawns (Greenhouse and North SRC) were selected as ideal candidates for conversion. The committee voted to reallocate remaining funds ($23,000) from the previous green space conversion project (see the final report here).
